Redundant Siemens S7-1500R Control for a Data Center
It was important to our customer to get a modern and redundant control, that can be upgraded or extended easily in the future.
Specifications:
- high reliability
- redundant communication
- redundant I/O modules
- management of approximately 200 digital inputs and 140 digital outputs
- connection to existing plant by PROFIBUS DP
To meet these demands we chose the S7-1500R control by SIEMENS. Our staff installed this kind of control for the third time. Earlier on we used the S7-1500R in a steam turbine control and in another complex emergency power supply system.

Both CPUs are connected to the I/O module stations by a PROFINET-IO ring. They also synchronize via this ring. In addition to the CPUs there are also doubled I/O module stations. This makes the hardware also redundant.
In case of a CPU failure the back up CPU takes over automatically and controls the processes. No data are lost and the process will continue very quick. The PROFINET-IO ring ensures all participants to be available even in case of a field bus disruption.
Engineering work is the same as with a standard CPU. Synchronisation of program and data are taken over by TIA portal and the redundant CPUs.

Some years ago the simulation model for the existing plant was built. The model consists of a mimic panel of the complete plant, the simulation of different circuit breakers and the PLC setup.
The advantage of such a simulation is, that PLC software changes can be tested before they are uploaded to the real plant. Additionally such a simulation can perfectly be used for training purposes.
During the actual project we were able to test the simulated existing plant together with the new extension at full scale. It was also possible to test very specific scenarios, which would not have been possible to test at side location.
